In a significant boost to India’s clean energy future, Evren, Brookfield’s India-based renewable energy platform, has signed a 300 MW Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with NTPC, India’s leading public sector power utility. The agreement focuses on delivering firm and dispatchable renewable energy, with a strong emphasis on battery energy storage systems (BESS).
At the heart of this initiative lies the development of a nearly 1 GW hybrid renewable infrastructure, integrating solar, wind, and advanced energy storage. This design ensures reliable, on-demand green energy — particularly crucial during peak demand periods, when fossil-fuel-based generation typically dominates. The battery component will play a vital role in storing excess renewable power and dispatching it when the grid needs it most.
The project represents a pioneering model of Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE), where energy storage acts as the bridge between variable generation and stable supply. It not only reduces the grid’s dependence on conventional peaking power but also aligns with India’s emerging energy storage obligations for power distribution companies (discoms).
“This PPA marks a great milestone for Evren,” said Suman Kumar, CEO of Evren. “Our investments in data-mapped land, interconnection approvals, and high-quality storage-integrated renewable sites enable us to deliver large-scale decarbonization solutions.”
Evren, a joint venture between Brookfield and Axis Energy, manages a robust portfolio of 11+ GW, including 7 GW in advanced stages of solar and wind development. The agreement reflects India’s accelerating shift toward hybrid renewable-storage solutions to create a more resilient and sustainable grid.
