IndiGrid, one of India’s foremost power sector Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvIT), has announced the successful commissioning of the country’s first regulated utility-scale standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The project, known as Kilokari BESS Private Limited (KBPL), boasts a capacity of 20 MW / 40 MWh and is located in Delhi.

Marking IndiGrid’s entry into commercial battery storage, this milestone project represents a pivotal moment in India’s energy transition. The BESS installation is engineered to support renewable energy integration into the distribution grid, enhance grid stability, manage peak demand, and fulfill ancillary power system needs.

The project was awarded to IndiGrid in October 2023 by BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL). It was executed in collaboration with key partners including BRPL, the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), and Ampere-hour Energy (AHE). Despite the complexity, the project was completed swiftly and safely, on schedule and within budget.

Harsh Shah, CEO and Whole Time Director of IndiGrid, highlighted the critical role of battery storage in India’s power future. He emphasized the importance of smart energy storage solutions for grid resilience and efficient renewable integration, stating that the project reflects IndiGrid’s dedication to sustainable infrastructure.
