ACE Power has announced that its two flagship Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in Queensland — the 900 MW / 3600 MWh Nebo BESS and the 500 MW / 2000 MWh Raglan BESS — have both received a “Not a Controlled Action” decision under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act.
This key milestone marks significant progress in ACE Power’s efforts to accelerate Queensland’s clean energy transition. Situated near Mackay and Gladstone, the Nebo and Raglan BESS projects are set to play crucial roles in enhancing grid stability, enabling greater renewable energy integration, and advancing the state’s net-zero emissions ambitions.
ACE Power Managing Director Andy Scullion welcomed the decision, stating that the EPBC determination represented a major advancement for both projects. He noted that the approval allows the projects to proceed without the need for further Commonwealth environmental assessment, reducing project risk and bringing them closer to the construction phase.
The Nebo BESS is positioned to become one of Australia’s largest battery storage installations, delivering critical firming capacity to support the growing share of renewables in the electricity grid. Similarly, the Raglan BESS will strengthen energy security across Central Queensland, boosting reliability while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Following these environmental clearances, ACE Power is now advancing toward connection agreements with Powerlink, with negotiations expected to take place later this year. Construction of both projects is scheduled to commence in 2026.
Engagement with First Nations communities and local stakeholders remains a priority for ACE Power. The company has hosted consultation events in both Nebo and Raglan to gather input prior to lodging development applications, and further engagement activities are planned as the projects near construction. ACE Power also aims to collaborate with local businesses for the supply of goods and services during the construction phase.
Mr. Scullion added that ACE Power is dedicated to partnering with local communities, Traditional Owners, and government stakeholders to ensure the projects deliver lasting economic and environmental benefits.
ACE Power continues to drive Australia’s energy transition forward, blending cutting-edge technology with responsible development practices to create a cleaner, stronger energy future.
