LEAG and Fluence to Build Europe’s Largest Battery Storage Project — 4 GWh ‘GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000’ to Boost Germany’s Renewable Grid Stability

In a landmark step toward Europe’s clean energy future, LEAG Clean Power GmbH and Fluence Energy GmbH have announced the construction of Europe’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS) — a 1 GW / 4 GWh facility to be developed in Jänschwalde, Germany. The project, titled GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000, marks Fluence’s largest single storage installation globally and will deploy its advanced Smartstack™ energy storage platform.

The partnership positions both companies at the forefront of Europe’s renewable energy transition, supporting grid reliability and accelerating decarbonization.

“With this project, we are igniting another growth engine for our GigawattFactory,” said Adi Roesch, CEO of LEAG Group. “By constructing gigascale storage facilities, we are addressing one of the biggest challenges of the energy transition — ensuring constant energy availability regardless of renewable generation.”

Julian Nebreda, President and CEO of Fluence, emphasized the project’s scale and significance: “This flagship project demonstrates that when expertise, vision, and courage come together, major transformation is possible. Together, we can reshape the foundation of Europe’s energy system.”

Designed as a four-hour storage facility, the GigaBattery system will deliver essential grid-balancing services, support energy trading, and enhance Germany’s energy security. Its flexible operation will help stabilize fluctuating renewable inputs, enabling optimal use of existing grid infrastructure.
