BHP has taken a decisive step toward sustainable mining by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global battery leader Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL). This partnership is focused on exploring battery technologies and electrification strategies aimed at slashing operational emissions across BHP’s mining activities.
The collaboration targets several key areas: battery development for heavy-duty mining equipment and locomotives, fast-charging infrastructure, and energy storage systems. Notably, BHP and CATL will also examine opportunities to enhance battery recycling—potentially integrating outputs from BHP’s copper operations to create closed-loop value chains.
Aligned with BHP’s commitment to achieving net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions from its operated assets by 2050, the initiative underscores a shared ambition to innovate for a low-carbon future. CATL brings to the table its deep expertise in next-gen battery systems and energy solutions, reinforcing the partnership’s potential to accelerate the mining industry’s clean energy transition.
“This strategic relationship marks further progress in BHP’s emissions reduction journey,” said Rashpal Bhatti, BHP’s Group Procurement Officer. “CATL is a natural partner with its strengths in battery tech and circular economy practices.”
Tan Libin, CATL’s Head of Overseas Business, echoed this sentiment: “Together with BHP, we aim to showcase how advanced battery technologies can decarbonise the mining value chain—transforming the global resources sector while delivering long-term value.”
As the mining sector seeks scalable, clean energy solutions, this BHP-CATL collaboration could serve as a benchmark for electrification-driven sustainability.
