On the occasion of World Environment Day, Maruti Suzuki India Limited announced a major expansion of its renewable energy initiatives, unveiling new biogas projects at its manufacturing facilities in Kharkhoda and Manesar as part of its broader commitment to reducing fossil fuel dependence and supporting India’s clean energy transition.

The company revealed plans to establish a 10 Tonnes Per Day (TPD) biogas plant at its Kharkhoda facility, scheduled to be commissioned within FY 2026–27. In parallel, Maruti Suzuki has completed the expansion of its existing biogas plant at the Manesar facility, increasing production capacity from 0.2 TPD to 0.7 TPD.

Together, the two projects represent an investment of ₹150 crore and form part of the company’s larger green energy roadmap, which includes a planned investment of ₹925 crore by FY 2030–31 toward sustainability and renewable energy initiatives.

According to the company, the Kharkhoda biogas plant will help mitigate approximately 9,490 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually when operating at full capacity and is expected to meet around 20% of the facility’s total gas requirements. The project aligns with the Government of India’s “Waste-to-Wealth” mission by converting organic waste into clean energy.

The expanded Manesar biogas facility is projected to generate around 360,000 standard cubic meters of biogas annually, reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 664 tonnes of CO₂ per year. The plant uses agricultural and organic waste, including food waste, Napier grass, and paddy straw, as feedstock through anaerobic digestion technology.

The resulting biogas will be utilized in manufacturing processes such as paint shop heating and canteen operations. Additionally, fermented organic manure produced as a by-product will be used for horticulture activities or returned to the agricultural ecosystem.

Commenting on the development, Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the company remains committed to reducing fossil fuel consumption and enhancing energy security through alternative energy sources. He noted that such initiatives are becoming increasingly important amid global energy uncertainties and align with India’s efforts to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels.

Beyond biogas, Maruti Suzuki continues to expand its renewable energy footprint through solar power. The company has already installed 79 MWp of solar capacity across its manufacturing operations and aims to increase renewable energy generation equivalent to 319 MWp by FY 2030–31.

Recently, the automaker also replaced natural gas with biogas for approximately 10% of the energy needs at its Hansalpur facility, highlighting the growing role of renewable fuels in its manufacturing operations.

The latest investments reinforce Maruti Suzuki’s strategy of integrating sustainable energy solutions across its business while contributing to India’s broader environmental and energy security goals.
