In a significant move towards bolstering the UK’s energy storage capacity, Masdar Arlington Energy, under the umbrella of Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, has initiated construction on two new battery energy storage system (BESS) facilities. These projects, located at Royle Barn Road in Rochdale and Welkin Road in Stockport, are set to deliver a combined output of 55MW. This capacity is sufficient to supply electricity to approximately 25,700 households, marking a crucial step forward in the UK’s transition to renewable energy sources.

The development of these BESS projects aligns with Masdar Arlington Energy’s strategic approach of revitalizing previously industrialized lands. By selecting sites in need of redevelopment, the company not only contributes to the local economy but also to the environmental regeneration of the areas.

This groundbreaking event underscores Masdar Arlington Energy’s commitment to an ambitious goal of developing a 3GWh pipeline of BESS projects within the UK. This initiative follows Masdar’s announcement last year of its intention to invest £1 billion in BESS projects, highlighting the company’s dedication to supporting the UK’s energy transition.

BESS technology offers a viable solution to the challenges of intermittency commonly associated with renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. By storing excess electricity during peak production times, these systems ensure a consistent supply of energy, even when natural conditions are not favorable for power generation.

The acquisition of Arlington Energy by Masdar in October 2022 marked a pivotal moment for the company, transitioning from a passive investor to an active participant in the UK’s renewable energy sector. With the establishment of its global headquarters for offshore wind in the UK in 2021, Masdar has been actively expanding its operations, including dedicated teams for its BESS and global offshore wind projects.

As a leading entity in the global renewable energy landscape, Masdar continues to spearhead the advancement of sustainable energy solutions. The company’s efforts in developing renewable energy and green hydrogen technologies are crucial in addressing the pressing sustainability challenges facing the world today.
