Rolls-Royce has received an order from the Latvian transmission system operator Augstsprieguma tikls (AST) to supply an mtu large-scale battery storage system to secure the Latvian power grid. Rolls-Royce will supply an mtu EnergyPack QG large-scale battery storage system with an output of 80 MW and a storage capacity of 160 MWh.

Rolls-Royce has been awarded a contract by the Latvian transmission system operator Augstsprieguma tikls (AST) to supply a large-scale battery storage system, marking a significant step towards securing the Latvian power grid ahead of the planned synchronization with the continental European power grid in 2025.

Dr. Jörg Stratmann, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, expressed pride in contributing to this critical project, emphasizing the company’s commitment to sustainable and reliable energy solutions globally. The battery storage system, an mtu EnergyPack QG model, boasts an impressive output of 80 MW and a storage capacity of 160 MWh, making it one of the largest battery storage systems in the EU.

Rolls-Royce’s scope of work includes providing general contractor services, as well as handling installation and commissioning. The battery system will be deployed across two locations: a 20 MW/40 MWh facility at the AST substation in Tume and a 60 MW/120 MWh facility at the AST substation in Rezekne. These state-of-the-art battery systems will play a crucial role in providing fast and automatically activated frequency regulation reserves necessary for the synchronization mode during the Baltic power transmission systems’ integration with the continental European grids.
