In a significant move towards bolstering grid-scale renewable energy solutions, Strata Clean Energy (Strata) has launched the construction of the Scatter Wash battery storage complex in Phoenix, Arizona. The ceremony was attended by Strata executives, Arizona Public Service (APS) representatives, and local dignitaries, marking the start of a project that will play a pivotal role in meeting the region’s growing energy demands.

Slated for completion in April 2025, the 255 MW / 1,020 MWh facility is poised to supply electricity to over 250,000 homes for four hours daily over two decades. It is designed to store substantial amounts of solar energy, which can be dispatched during peak demand, especially in the summer months when Arizona faces extreme heat.

Josh Rogol, President of Strata Clean Energy, emphasized the project’s significance in advancing sustainable energy solutions in a rapidly expanding metropolitan area. The initiative underscores Strata’s commitment to enhancing grid reliability and contributing to decarbonization efforts.

Jacob Tetlow, Executive Vice President of Operations at APS, highlighted the importance of reliable and affordable power for Arizona’s fast-growing population, particularly during hot summer days. The Scatter Wash project is expected to provide a balanced and diverse power supply for APS customers.

The project stemmed from a 20-year tolling agreement between Strata and APS, following an All-Source RFP conducted by APS in 2022 to address the electricity needs of its residential and business customers.

Mortenson has been appointed as the EPC partner for Scatter Wash, chosen for their technical expertise and proven track record. The facility will incorporate Tesla’s advanced Megapack 2XL battery systems for efficient energy storage and dispatch.

Supported by the Investment Tax Credit from the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, Scatter Wash is a testament to the positive impact of national sustainable energy incentives on the energy transition.
