SECI Awards 125MW/500MWh Odisha BESS Projects to Coal India and Onward Solar

Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has concluded its auction for 125 MW/500 MWh of standalone Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Odisha, marking another step toward strengthening India’s clean energy and grid reliability framework.

The auction discovered tariffs ranging between ₹3.04 per kW per month and ₹3.75 per kW per month.

Coal India Limited emerged as a key winner, securing Cluster I comprising two 20 MW/80 MWh projects, totalling 40 MW/160 MWh, at a tariff of ₹3.04 per kW per month. The company also won Cluster II, which includes two additional 20 MW/80 MWh projects with a combined capacity of 40 MW/160 MWh, at ₹3.05 per kW per month.

Onward Solar Power secured the remaining 45 MW/180 MWh capacity at a tariff of ₹3.75 per kW per month.

The tender, issued in December 2025, is backed by Viability Gap Funding under the Power System Development Fund. The projects are intended to provide on-demand energy storage support to GRIDCO Limited.

The BESS installations will be deployed across six substations in Odisha — Padampur, New Bolangir, Bhatli, Basta, Narendrapur and Tentuli Khunti — with the objective of enhancing grid stability during peak and off-peak demand periods.
