Ola Electric has received the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification and license for its residential battery energy storage system (BESS), Ola शक्ति, equipped with a 6 kW/9.1 kWh battery pack powered by the company’s indigenously developed 4680 Bharat Cell.
With this approval, Ola शक्ति becomes the country’s first residential BESS designed, engineered and manufactured entirely in India to receive BIS certification. The license has been granted in compliance with IS 16242 (Part 1): 2025 / IEC 62040-1: 2017, following testing conducted at a BIS-recognised laboratory.
As part of the certification process, the system underwent a comprehensive range of electrical and mechanical safety evaluations. These included short-circuit and overload protection tests, fire and thermal hazard safeguards, electric shock protection, environmental stress testing, sonic pressure hazard evaluation, and mechanical hazard assessments, in line with applicable BIS standards.
Commenting on the development, an Ola Electric spokesperson said that the BIS certification marks a key milestone in the company’s energy storage journey and enables the rollout of its first residential BESS units. The spokesperson added that Ola शक्ति is aimed at delivering dependable, affordable and intelligent energy storage solutions for homes, farms and businesses, supporting India’s transition towards clean, decentralised and self-reliant energy systems.
Ola शक्ति offers automotive-grade safety, high efficiency and zero running and maintenance costs. Unlike conventional lead-acid inverters and diesel generators, the system provides instant 0 ms changeover, operates across a wide input voltage range of 170 V to 270 V to protect appliances from voltage fluctuations, and features spill-proof, IP67-rated batteries tested for dust, water and monsoon conditions.
The product is available in two variants: a 3 kW/5.2 kWh system priced at ₹1,49,999, and a 6 kW/9.1 kWh system priced at ₹2,49,999. Ola said the system is capable of powering appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators, induction cooktops, farm pumps and communication equipment, offering fast charging and up to 1.5 hours of backup at full load.
Ola शक्ति is available for purchase through the Ola Electric website and company-owned stores. Deliveries of the 9.1 kWh variant are scheduled to begin by the end of January 2026, while deliveries of the 5.2 kWh variant are expected to commence in mid-February 2026.
