Aukera Energy has secured a €60 million debt financing facility from Kommunalkredit Austria AG to support the construction of a landmark 250 MW / 500 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Gura Ialomiței, Ialomița County, Romania. The project is set to become one of the largest standalone storage installations in Central and Eastern Europe.
The storage facility will be developed in two phases, with construction of Phase 1 already underway. Aukera expects the full project to be operational by mid-2026. The financing marks Aukera’s first debt-backed initiative in Romania and represents a major milestone in the company’s ambition to build a 2 GW BESS portfolio across the country.
Aukera stated that the deal underscores its growing capability to execute large-scale, technically complex energy infrastructure across multiple European markets. The company’s strong combination of local presence and international engineering expertise was key to securing the financing.
The storage team, known for pioneering early developments in the UK’s battery market, is applying its experience in project design, procurement, and operations to deliver high-impact energy storage assets in Romania. According to Aukera, the new BESS will help stabilize Romania’s electricity grid, support higher integration of renewable energy, and enhance the efficiency of transmission networks.
By enabling smarter dispatch and timing of energy delivery, the project is also expected to reduce system costs and contribute to more affordable electricity for consumers.
Aukera said the financing further strengthens its position as a leading innovator in Europe’s fast-growing battery storage sector.
