Sungrow and ENGIE complete first 400 MWh of Europe’s largest battery storage project

In a major leap for Europe’s renewable energy infrastructure, Sungrow, the world’s leading PV inverter and energy storage system (ESS) provider, has successfully achieved grid connection for the first 400MWh phase of ENGIE’s 200MW/800MWh battery energy storage project in Vilvoorde, Belgium. The installation, comprising 320 units of Sungrow’s advanced PowerTitan liquid-cooled battery systems, marks mainland Europe’s largest battery energy storage facility to date.

The second phase of the project, adding another 400MWh, is scheduled for completion by end of 2025, collectively designed to stabilize the Belgian grid and supply clean, reliable power to around 96,000 households.

Moritz Rolf, Vice President of Sungrow Europe, emphasized the project’s significance in Europe’s clean energy transition: Battery storage is a cornerstone of a successful energy transition. Our collaboration with ENGIE showcases how Sungrow’s technology enables the grid flexibility essential for Europe’s renewable future.

Vincent Verbeke, CEO of ENGIE Belgium, echoed the sentiment, noting that strong partnerships make such large-scale advancements possible: The Vilvoorde battery park demonstrates how collaboration and innovation can accelerate renewable integration and ensure a more reliable, sustainable, and affordable energy system.

Powered by Sungrow’s PowerTitan system, the project leverages liquid-cooled, compact, and intelligent design to optimize land use and ensure stable temperature control for long-term efficiency and safety. The system’s flexibility allows it to absorb excess renewable energy and release it during peak demand, effectively reducing grid congestion and improving reliability.

With a dedicated local presence in the BeNeLux region, including offices and an R&D centre in Amsterdam, Sungrow continues to expand its footprint in Europe. The company remains committed to bridging the continent’s clean energy goals with cutting-edge storage technology, reinforcing its role as a trusted partner in achieving a sustainable, carbon-neutral future by 2050.
