Germany has surpassed a major clean energy milestone, with more than 2 million battery storage systems now installed nationwide, according to new data from the Federal Network Agency’s Market Master Data Register (MaStR), analyzed by the Internationales Wirtschaftsforum Regenerative Energien (IWR).
Between January and July 2025 alone, over 318,000 new storage systems were commissioned, adding 2,088 MW of power and an energy capacity of 3,868 MWh.
“The number of installed storage systems has surpassed an important milestone with over 2 million units. The real market ramp-up, however, is just beginning,” said Dr. Norbert Allnoch, head of IWR. He highlighted that falling battery prices, alongside surging demand from industry and commerce, are the main growth drivers.
A federal breakdown shows North Rhine-Westphalia leading installations with around 10,900 new systems, followed by Bavaria (9,950) and Baden-Württemberg (8,600). Allnoch predicted that North Rhine-Westphalia, with its industrial base and repurposable former power plant sites, is poised to become Germany’s future storage hub.
If the current trend continues, IWR forecasts 550,000 new systems in 2025, bringing the national total to 2.3 million units by year-end. By then, Germany’s cumulative storage capacity could exceed 16 GW of power and 25 GWh of energy capacity.
