Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has acquired full ownership of the Beehive Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Peoria, Arizona from EDF Power Solutions North America, the companies announced on August 15, 2025. The project, which began construction earlier this year under EDF Power Solutions, totals 250 MW with a four-hour duration, equating to 1 GWh of storage capacity. Under the new arrangement, CIP will oversee the remainder of construction, with commercial operations slated to begin in the first half of 2026.

The Beehive project will operate under a 20-year tolling agreement with Arizona Public Service Company (APS), the state’s largest utility provider serving over 1.4 million customers. Designed to draw energy from the grid during periods of high renewable generation, the system will store power in batteries and discharge it back into the grid during peak-demand periods. The project is expected to strengthen APS’s ability to meet growing energy demand and support grid reliability.

Tim Evans, Partner and Head of North America at CIP, highlighted the importance of battery storage in meeting the region’s expanding electricity needs and noted Beehive will add to CIP’s extensive portfolio of energy infrastructure projects. EDF Power Solutions called the agreement an important step in its continued development of standalone storage projects and a demonstration of its commitment to supporting the energy transition.

CI V, CIP’s fifth flagship fund, closed in March 2025 with commitments exceeding USD 14 billion and aims to invest in energy infrastructure projects across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.
