Galileo Empower has received unanimous approval from West Lothian Council’s Development Management Committee for its first Scottish Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project. The facility, to be located at Middlerigg Farm between Bathgate and Armadale, will deliver a storage capacity of 49.9MW. It will be situated near the A801, adjacent to Bathgate Substation.
The BESS will enable surplus renewable electricity to be stored during low-demand periods and released when demand peaks. This plays a critical role in stabilizing the electricity grid and enhancing the use of intermittent renewable energy sources, furthering the UK’s net-zero objectives.
Project manager Laura Petrie emphasized the significance of this milestone, stating that the consent followed “extensive engagement with local communities” and marked a crucial step in reducing reliance on fossil fuels. She also highlighted the project’s potential to contribute to local economic growth and environmental sustainability.
To ensure local benefits, Galileo Empower plans to establish a community fund focused on health, physical activity, and education and training initiatives. The company also pledged to prioritize local suppliers and contractors during the construction and operation phases.
This development underscores Galileo Empower’s commitment to supporting the energy transition in Scotland while delivering tangible community and climate benefits. The company intends to maintain ongoing collaboration with the Council and local stakeholders as the project advances.
