Lyten, a global leader in lithium-sulfur battery technology, has announced the acquisition of Northvolt’s battery energy storage systems (BESS) manufacturing facility in Gdansk, Poland. Known as Northvolt Dwa ESS, the 25,000-square-meter operation is Europe’s largest BESS manufacturing site. The financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed.
The acquisition marks a significant milestone for Lyten as it accelerates its expansion into the European energy storage market. Production at the Gdansk plant will restart immediately, enabling Lyten to fulfill existing and new BESS orders while also introducing the world’s first lithium-sulfur powered BESS. The move complements Lyten’s earlier acquisition of a lithium-metal cell facility from Northvolt in Silicon Valley.
With a current capacity of 6 GWh and future expansion plans up to 10+ GWh, the facility strengthens Lyten’s position in meeting global demand. The site is powered by renewables and has contracted orders into 2026.
“Combining Silicon Valley innovation with Polish engineering talent allows us to bring next-gen energy storage to global markets,” said Dan Cook, Lyten CEO. Chairman Lars Herlitz emphasized the strategic importance of a European-based, geopolitically secure supply chain.
Lyten’s lithium-sulfur batteries offer high energy density, broader temperature range, enhanced safety, and are made from locally abundant materials—eschewing nickel, cobalt, manganese, and graphite.
Northvolt Poland CEO Robert Chryc-Gawrychowski expressed confidence in Lyten’s ability to carry forward Northvolt’s sustainability mission. The transaction is expected to close in Q3 2025.
