Global energy storage operator BW ESS and Munich-based energy storage developer MIRAI Power have entered into a joint development agreement to co-develop up to 1GW of energy storage projects in Southern Germany. This collaboration is set to capitalize on Germany’s rising prominence as a growth hotspot for large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Europe.

As the largest and most liquid power market in Europe, Germany is seeking effective solutions to integrate large volumes of renewable energy while mitigating risks such as negative pricing and curtailment. The country is expected to add around 7GWh of new storage by 2026, a five-fold increase in capacity, underscoring the demand for energy storage in the region.

MIRAI Power, a pioneering developer in the European BESS market, brings to the table a leadership team with extensive experience in renewable power development and utilities. Combining this expertise with BW ESS’ capability in rapidly scaling energy storage projects globally, the partnership aims to unlock new opportunities in Southern Germany.

Roberto Jiménez, Executive Director of BW ESS, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “The MIRAI team shares many of the same attributes as our own—pragmatic, fast-moving, and commercially astute. Together, we are committed to unlocking the value of energy storage and expanding our presence in the German market.”

Marco Frascati, Managing Director of MIRAI Power, highlighted the strategic potential of the region, stating, “Southern Germany offers significant energy storage development opportunities. Our partnership with BW ESS will help accelerate our mission to decarbonize the energy system with innovative BESS projects.”

The partnership is poised to contribute significantly to Germany’s renewable energy transition, creating a sustainable and reliable energy supply for the future.
