In a recent announcement, Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ) disclosed that its majority-owned subsidiary, CSI Solar Co., Ltd., operating under the name e-STORAGE, is set to deliver 220 MWh DC of energy storage solutions for an independent energy storage project in Mannum, South Australia. The project is owned by Epic Energy and is being developed by Canadian Solar’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Recurrent Energy. Construction on the Mannum project is scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2024.

Epic Energy, a prominent player in Australia’s energy infrastructure sector, with a vast gas pipeline network spanning over 1,200 kilometers and a growing renewable energy portfolio, is leading the Mannum storage project. The initiative aligns with Epic Energy’s dedication to renewable energy generation and complements the existing 46 MWp solar farm capacity at the same location. The storage project aims to serve as a crucial energy reservoir, enhancing grid stability in the region.

Under a comprehensive Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) agreement and Long-Term Service Agreement (“LTSA”), e-STORAGE will spearhead the construction. The Mannum project will feature SolBank, a proprietary energy storage solution utilizing robust lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells with high-cycle capacity. The integration of a top-tier active balancing Battery Management System (BMS) and an exceptionally efficient Thermal Management System (TMS) ensures superior performance with a focus on safety.

Clive D’Cruz, Chief Executive Officer of Epic Energy, emphasized the significance of the standalone battery storage system in complementing Epic Energy’s existing investments at the Mannum site. The battery will work alongside two adjacent solar farms, absorbing excess energy during the day and storing it for use during the evening peak, thereby contributing to the stability of the South Australian electricity market and overall energy security.

Colin Parkin, President of e-STORAGE, expressed delight in collaborating with Epic Energy and Recurrent Energy, highlighting the Mannum project’s role in supporting Australia’s energy network development and facilitating the adoption of renewable energy generation.
