Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) has unveiled plans for its subsidiary, e-STORAGE, to supply 220 MWh DC of cutting-edge battery storage solutions to Epic Energy’s Mannum Project in South Australia. The announcement underscores Canadian Solar’s commitment to advancing renewable energy infrastructure globally.
The energy storage project in Mannum, South Australia, is part of a larger initiative led by Canadian Solar through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Recurrent Energy. e-STORAGE, a vital component of the Company’s majority-owned subsidiary CSI Solar Co., Ltd., is set to commence construction on the Mannum project in the second quarter of 2024.
Epic Energy, a prominent player in Australia’s energy infrastructure landscape, stands at the forefront of sustainable energy solutions. The Mannum storage project is a testament to Epic Energy’s dedication to renewable energy and aligns seamlessly with the existing 46 MWp solar farm capacity at the same location. This strategic integration will serve as a crucial energy reservoir, enhancing grid stability in the region.
Under a comprehensive Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) agreement and Long-Term Service Agreement (“LTSA”), e-STORAGE is poised to deliver cutting-edge solutions to the Mannum project. The proprietary energy storage solution, SolBank, employs robust lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) cells with high-cycle capacity. Accompanied by a top-tier active balancing Battery Management System (BMS) and an exceptionally efficient Thermal Management System (TMS), SolBank ensures optimal performance with the highest standards of safety.
Clive D’Cruz, Chief Executive Officer of Epic Energy, emphasized the significance of the standalone battery storage system, stating, “The standalone battery storage system rounds out Epic Energy’s investment at the current Mannum site, with the battery to sit alongside Epic Energy’s two adjacent solar farms, which harness the region’s consistent sunlight. The battery will further support the South Australian electricity market and ongoing energy security by absorbing excess energy during the day and storing it for use during the evening peak.”
Colin Parkin, President of e-STORAGE, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We are delighted to collaborate with Epic Energy and Recurrent as they expand their renewable energy portfolio in Australia by providing our energy storage technology platform. The Mannum project will support Australia with the efficient development of its energy network, further facilitating the adoption of renewable energy generation.”
As e-STORAGE moves forward with construction in 2024, this collaboration marks a significant milestone in advancing renewable energy solutions and contributing to Australia’s sustainable energy landscape.
