Merus Power Oyj has signed a deal with Lapland-based Neve Oy to deliver a 30 MW/80 MWh battery energy storage facility designed to operate in extreme Arctic conditions. The system is expected to be delivered by the end of 2026, with comprehensive operations and maintenance services included.
The energy storage facility has been engineered to withstand temperatures as low as -50 °C, heavy snowfall, and ice, ensuring reliable operation in harsh northern conditions. Using grid forming technology, the system supports electricity grid inertia and strengthens overall system stability. Merus Power previously supplied the first grid forming energy storage systems in the Nordic region to Valkeakoski and Lappeenranta in 2025.
Merus Power will manage the manufacture, installation, and testing of the system, which is controlled by its proprietary software developed in Finland. The system integrates advanced technology with Finnish quality and cybersecurity standards, ensuring operational reliability even under exceptional circumstances.
Neve Oy, a city-owned multi-sector group in Rovaniemi, manages electricity transmission, district heating, water supply, fiber optics, and other infrastructure services in the region. The new energy storage facility will enable participation in multiple electricity markets, enhancing grid flexibility and reliability under demanding Arctic conditions.
“Arctic conditions place exceptional requirements on electrical systems. Merus Power’s solution supports our strategic goal of developing reliable and sustainable energy solutions for Lapland,” said Kristian Gullsten, CEO of Neve Oy.
“Merus Power’s energy storage solutions are developed for demanding grid environments where performance, reliability, and high availability are critical. We are proud to support Neve Oy in enhancing the flexibility and reliability of its energy system,” added Kari Tuomala, CEO of Merus Power.
The deal further strengthens Merus Power’s position as a supplier of advanced energy storage solutions in the Nordic countries and internationally.
