Leclanché SA has signed a €74.2 million grant agreement with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) to advance sustainable battery manufacturing technologies in Europe. The funding, part of the EU Innovation Fund, marks a significant step toward scaling up low-carbon, PFAS-free lithium-ion cell production within the EU.

The project was selected from 14 proposals across eight countries and is one of six pioneering EV battery initiatives to receive EU support. It contributes to the EU’s broader €852 million investment aimed at strengthening Europe’s battery production ecosystem and reducing dependence on imported technologies.

Under the initiative, Leclanché will expand its Willstätt, Germany facility to a 2 GWh capacity, enabling large-scale production of its proprietary water-based, PFAS-free lithium-ion cells. The environmentally friendly technology aligns with the European Green Deal and EU Battery Regulations, targeting reduced reliance on hazardous materials and a lower carbon footprint.

The grant validates the strength and maturity of our low-carbon cell manufacturing technologies,” said Pierre Blanc, CEO of Leclanché SA. “It reinforces our position as a key industrial player in Germany and supports Europe’s goal of developing a sustainable and competitive battery ecosystem.

Leclanché’s leadership expressed gratitude to shareholders and investors for their continued support, emphasizing that their commitment has enabled sustained R&D investments and technological innovation recognized through this EU award.

To unlock the grant, Leclanché must secure €141.3 million in complementary funding by June 2026. The company is actively engaging with strategic and financial partners to finalize both long-term and bridge financing to maintain operations during the transition period.

The next phase will focus on detailed project planning, obtaining permits, and signing agreements with suppliers and partners. The implementation roadmap aims to showcase industrial competitiveness, energy efficiency, and the use of renewable energy to minimize carbon emissions.

Founded in 1909, Leclanché is a global leader in energy storage solutions with operations spanning Europe and beyond. Listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange (LECN), the company specializes in lithium-ion cells, e-mobility solutions, and large-scale stationary storage systems.
