In a major step towards coupling electromobility with the energy transition, BMW Group and E.ON have introduced Germany’s first commercial Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) solution for private customers. The innovative system allows BMW iX3 drivers not only to consume electricity but also to feed power back into the grid, turning their vehicles into flexible energy storage units for everyday use.
With the rollout of this offering, electric cars can now play a direct role in stabilizing the energy system while delivering financial incentives to drivers. Customers who opt into V2G services can receive annual bonuses of up to €720, enabling them to drive as much as 14,000 kilometers a year at no charging cost.
The service is powered by the BMW Wallbox Professional and an intelligent energy management platform co-developed by BMW and E.ON. A specially designed V2G electricity tariff ensures seamless, bidirectional energy flow.
Marc Spieker, Member of the Board of Management of E.ON SE, highlighted the customer benefits: “Together with BMW, E.ON is bringing Vehicle-to-Grid directly to the people. Neue Klasse meets new energy! We combine charging convenience with tangible economic benefits. And, as a bonus, every connected vehicle can help lower the overall costs of the energy system—for the benefit of all.”
Dr. Joachim Post, BMW AG Board Member for Development, emphasized the broader impact: “With the Neue Klasse, BMW makes the car an active part of the energy system, creating tangible customer value. Vehicle-to-Grid reduces our customers’ energy costs while at the same time contributing to a stable energy supply.”
Key Features of the V2G Offering:
- Fair and transparent compensation: Customers are credited for every hour plugged in, with no minimum connection time.
- Full control for drivers: Charging goals can be set to guarantee mobility needs are met.
- Battery protection: Intelligent safeguards ensure long-term battery health.
- Support for the energy transition: EV batteries balance supply and demand, integrating renewable energy more effectively.
The technology debuts with the BMW iX3 and will gradually extend across additional BMW model ranges. Looking ahead, BMW and E.ON plan to integrate V2G into a wider energy ecosystem, connecting EVs with solar panels, heat pumps, and smart home systems—an open and customer-centric platform for the future.
