Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) and BHP Group Limited (BHP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on advancing battery technology and electrification solutions for the mining sector.
Under the agreement, the two companies will jointly explore battery-powered solutions for mining equipment and locomotives, with a focus on rapid charging infrastructure. The partnership will also assess the potential of energy storage systems and battery recycling technologies to support BHP’s operational needs.
CATL emphasized that the collaboration reflects its broader commitment to a zero-carbon future, leveraging its expertise in advanced battery technologies. For BHP, the partnership supports its strategic target of achieving net zero operational greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1 and 2 from operated assets) by 2050.
Industry analysts view the MoU as a significant step toward accelerating the electrification of heavy industries, highlighting the crucial role of battery innovation in reducing emissions from mining operations.
