Global energy storage owner-operator BW ESS has partnered with Spanish developer Ibersun to launch a joint venture that will deliver 2.2 gigawatts (GW) of utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects across Spain in its initial phase.

This collaboration comes at a time when Spain’s energy storage market is rapidly expanding, with the national energy strategy targeting 22.5 GW of installed BESS capacity by 2030. The surge in solar and wind generation, coupled with limited interconnection between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe, has created a critical need for reliable storage solutions. BESS infrastructure is seen as vital for grid stability and for minimizing energy waste when supply surpasses demand.

The BW ESS–Ibersun venture will focus on greenfield BESS assets with four-hour discharge durations. The initial pipeline includes eight projects that will be equally owned by both partners. Each site is expected to reach Ready-to-Build (RTB) status within two years, with revenue strategies tailored to each project’s characteristics and market conditions.

Founded in 2019 and based in Getxo, Basque Country, Ibersun has been actively developing renewable energy projects in Spain, with a growing emphasis on energy storage. The firm is led by industry veterans Javier Arkotxa and Jose Antonio Gutiérrez, who bring over 25 years of experience in the energy sector.

Isaac Garcia Moreno, Executive Director of BW ESS, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that the companies share a mission to enhance grid resilience and accelerate Spain’s energy transition.

Both companies emphasized the importance of sustainable development and aligning infrastructure projects with local communities and environmental standards.
