GridBeyond, a leading Irish energy technology company, has officially launched its first energy trading operation in Japan using a front-of-the-meter (FTM) battery asset. The announcement was made on June 24 during the Ireland Innovation Seminar held at the Embassy of Ireland in Tokyo, where the company presented alongside its Japanese partner, PORT Inc.

The milestone follows the successful commissioning of a 2 MW / 8 MWh grid-scale battery in Gunma Prefecture by PORT. The asset marks GridBeyond’s first live battery trading project in the Japanese market and serves as the foundation for a broader rollout of energy storage projects scheduled between 2025 and 2028.

Ireland’s Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke TD, attended the seminar and praised the collaboration as a significant international achievement. “GridBeyond is a prime example of Irish innovation and sustainability leadership. The launch of this initiative in Japan, a vital growth market, highlights the global impact of Irish energy technology,” he said.

PORT Inc., which announced its entry into the battery power plant sector in March, is aligning its strategy with Japan’s carbon neutrality goals for 2050. Since then, the company has been working closely with GridBeyond to optimize battery operations and enhance system performance.

PORT’s President and CEO, Hirofumi Kasuga, described the launch as a major milestone for both companies. “This project strengthens our operational base and represents a critical step toward large-scale battery deployment across Japan. Our partnership with GridBeyond is not just technical—it opens the door to broader energy market innovation,” he said.

Atsushi Ito, Country Manager at GridBeyond GK (Japan), emphasized the company’s broader vision, stating that in addition to grid battery operations, GridBeyond is developing strategies for demand-side flexibility through CHP optimization, AI-driven energy asset management, and demand response using data centers.

GridBeyond reaffirmed its long-term commitment to the Japanese energy market and its mission to support the country’s decarbonization goals by delivering advanced flexibility services tailored to local regulations and grid structures.
