NLC India Renewables Ltd (NLRIL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NLC India Ltd, has secured a significant contract from the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd (TNGEC), a state-backed entity, to develop three major Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across Tamil Nadu.

The Letter of Award (LoA) marks NLCIL Group’s entry into large-scale battery energy storage, setting a key milestone in its diversification into clean energy solutions. These projects will be developed under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model and will benefit from Viability Gap Funding (VGF) to support economic feasibility.

Each of the three storage systems will have a total capacity of 250 MW/500 MWh, and will be located at strategic substations within the state — Ottapidaram and Kayathar substations in Tuticorin, and Anuppankulam substation in Virudhunagar district. These installations are planned at voltage levels of 400/230/110 kV, critical for integrating large-scale storage with the grid.

NLC India highlighted that the projects were awarded through a competitive bidding process, underscoring its competitiveness in the emerging energy storage sector. The initiative is expected to enhance Tamil Nadu’s renewable energy infrastructure by improving grid stability and enabling better integration of solar and wind energy.
