NTPC Group is charting a major expansion in its clean energy portfolio with plans to develop 20 GW of pumped storage projects (PSPs) across India. A senior official confirmed the company aims to commission 3 to 5 GW of this capacity by the financial year 2031–32 (FY32), marking a significant push toward long-duration energy storage to support the country’s renewable energy goals, according to IBEF.

The initiative is being driven by NTPC Ltd and its hydro subsidiaries. Pumped storage is considered a crucial element in stabilizing renewable power supply due to its ability to provide reliable backup and long operational life of over 40 years. The technology not only enhances grid flexibility but also offers regulated financial returns, making it a sustainable investment for the future.

The Group’s first major PSP under this drive—a 1,000 MW (4×250 MW) project located in Tehri, Uttarakhand—has started commercial operations through one of its units this month. Full commissioning is expected by FY26. In parallel, NTPC has completed preliminary feasibility reports for 18 PSPs and is finalizing detailed project reports for four others, indicating a steady acceleration in project development.

As of June 13, 2025, NTPC’s standalone commercial generation capacity stands at 60,266 MW, while the Group’s total generation capacity has reached 81,368 MW. With this aggressive expansion into PSPs, NTPC reinforces its role in securing India’s energy future while aligning with national climate and sustainability targets.
