Huawei and SchneiTec Commission World’s First TÜV SÜD-Certified Grid-Forming Energy Storage Project

In a significant step toward renewable energy advancement in Southeast Asia, Huawei Digital Power, in partnership with Cambodian energy solutions leader SchneiTec, has successfully commissioned the country’s first TÜV SÜD-certified grid-forming energy storage system (ESS). This landmark project marks the debut of grid-forming ESS technology in Cambodia and is poised to play a pivotal role in strengthening grid resilience and enabling large-scale clean energy integration.

Project Scope and Innovation
The commissioned system includes a 12MWh energy storage installation, featuring a 2MWh dedicated testbed designed to validate Huawei’s Smart String Grid-Forming ESS technology. The deployment has been officially certified by TÜV SÜD, a globally recognized authority in energy system testing, signifying compliance with international standards and operational excellence.

Huawei’s technology demonstrated exceptional grid-forming capabilities, particularly in managing off-grid and weak-grid conditions. The system enables the seamless integration of variable renewable energy sources while ensuring grid stability through advanced control features.

Key Technical Highlights

  • Inertia Response: The system achieved an inertia time constant (Tj) between 3 to 20 seconds—significantly surpassing the minimum requirement—enabling rapid stabilization during grid disturbances.
  • Voltage Ride-Through: It maintained stable operation across a wide voltage range from 5% to 130% of the rated voltage, successfully handling voltage dips and surges.
  • Overload Performance & Frequency Support: The ESS sustained up to 300% overload conditions and effectively mitigated low-frequency oscillations in the 0.2Hz–5Hz band.
  • Black Start Capability: The system provided fast black start under load, supporting efficient restoration in the event of a total power outage.
