NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a subsidiary of India’s largest power utility, has emerged as the successful bidder in a significant energy storage tender floated by NHPC Limited. The company secured a total capacity of 80MW/320MWh in the e-reverse auction conducted on May 21, 2025.
The auction was held under NHPC’s initiative for the “Selection of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Developers” aimed at establishing 125MW/500MWh of Interstate Transmission System (InSTS)-connected standalone battery storage systems across Kerala. The project was tendered through a Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) process and includes financial support via Viability Gap Funding (VGF).
NGEL’s winning bid covers two strategically located projects:
- 40MW/160MWh at Pothencode Substation, awarded at a tariff of ₹4,57,000 per MW per month.
- 40MW/160MWh at Sreekantapuram Substation, awarded at a slightly lower tariff of ₹4,34,000 per MW per month.
While NGEL awaits the official letter of award from NHPC, the win marks a significant milestone in the company’s expanding portfolio of green and grid-support infrastructure. The project is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing grid stability and supporting renewable energy integration in Kerala.
