Spanish renewable energy developer Grenergy has signed a major supply agreement with BYD Energy Storage, marking one of the most significant energy storage deals in the global market. Under the agreement, BYD will provide 3.5 GWh of battery energy storage systems for the sixth phase of the Oasis de Atacama (Elena) project, located in northern Chile.

The deal represents the largest collaboration to date between Grenergy and BYD and is being described as the largest battery supply agreement in Latin America and the second largest globally. This milestone reinforces both companies’ strategic alliance and their commitment to large-scale, sustainable energy development.

As part of the agreement, BYD Energy Storage will deliver 6,240 units of its MC Cube-T model — equivalent to 624 containers — to support the development of the Elena phase. This portion of the Oasis de Atacama project will feature 446 MW of solar PV capacity integrated with the 3.5 GWh energy storage system, enabling greater flexibility and stability for Chile’s electricity grid.

The MC Cube-T battery units are powered by BYD’s proprietary Blade Battery technology, known for high safety standards, operational durability, and energy efficiency. These features are particularly suitable for the technical and environmental demands of the Atacama Desert, one of the most extreme yet solar-rich regions in the world.

This agreement builds on Grenergy’s earlier collaboration with BYD during the first three phases of the Oasis de Atacama project, which together accounted for 3 GWh of installed storage. With this new supply, the total contracted volume between the two companies now reaches 6.5 GWh, positioning Oasis de Atacama as a globally leading hybrid solar and storage development.

The Elena phase is expected to play a key role in Chile’s energy transition, supporting national decarbonization goals while enhancing grid reliability in a region with increasing energy demand.

This collaboration further highlights Grenergy’s leadership in utility-scale solar-plus-storage and underscores BYD’s growing presence in delivering large-scale energy storage solutions across the Americas.
