Sungrow Zelestra Agreement

Renewable energy firm Zelestra has signed a major agreement with leading energy solutions provider Sungrow for the supply of 1 GWh of battery energy storage system (BESS) technology as part of the Aurora hybrid project in northern Chile. The deal marks one of the largest battery energy storage initiatives currently under construction in Latin America.

As part of the agreement, Sungrow will supply its state-of-the-art PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled BESS technology and Medium Voltage (MV) Power Conversion Units for the 1 GWh storage facility. The BESS component is a critical element of the larger Aurora project, located in the Tarapacá region, which also includes a 220 MWdc solar power plant. The solar installation will be powered by Sungrow’s 1+X Modular Inverter, an 8.8 MW block design technology.

The hybrid design of the Aurora project enables Zelestra to deliver a tailored, multi-technology energy solution to Chilean energy company Abastible. Through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), the project will ensure a stable supply of solar energy to Abastible during nighttime hours. This arrangement supports the expansion of Abastible’s carbon-free energy portfolio. The company is a major player in Chile’s liquefied natural gas market and is increasing its presence in the electricity sector.

Construction is already underway at the Aurora site. Once operational, it is expected to generate around 600 GWh of renewable electricity annually—enough to power approximately 200,000 Chilean households. Initial deliveries of the BESS units are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Commenting on the agreement, Leo Moreno, CEO of Zelestra, stated “With this major agreement, we have secured some of the most advanced BESS technology available in the market to deliver one the largest battery storage projects ever in Latin America. This is an important milestone for the Aurora project, as we advance towards the delivery of this highly customized hybrid solution that will meet the needs of our customer, Abastible.”

Jack Gu, Vice Chairman at Sungrow, added “We are proud to partner with Zelestra on the landmark Aurora project, delivering our cutting-edge PowerTitan 2.0 energy storage solution as well as PV inverters to one of the most significant hybrid projects in Latin America. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to accelerating the energy transition in Chile and across the region, while ensuring a reliable, sustainable power supply for Chilean homes. Together, we are unlocking the full potential of solar and storage to build a greener future.”

Zelestra continues to grow its renewable energy footprint, with a project portfolio of more than 7 GW across Latin America. This includes 1.7 GW of projects that are contracted, under construction, or operational. Recently, BloombergNEF recognized the company as one of the top 10 sellers of clean energy to corporate clients worldwide, ranking second in the Europe, Middle East, and Asia region.
