Assam is set to establish a major battery energy storage system (BESS) as part of its renewable energy push, with a 250 MW facility being jointly developed by Assam Power Development Corporation Ltd (APDCL) and ONGC Tripura Power Company Ltd (OTPCL), a subsidiary of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).
The project will play a crucial role in enhancing the state’s energy infrastructure by storing excess solar power during the day and supplying it during peak demand or at night. This initiative aligns with India’s growing focus on energy storage to stabilize the grid, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and enable higher integration of renewable energy sources.
According to an APDCL official, the upcoming BESS will support Assam’s efforts to ensure a more reliable and sustainable power supply, particularly in remote and rural areas that face voltage fluctuations and intermittent power availability. The storage system will help bridge the gap between energy production and consumption, improving load management across the state.
The collaboration between APDCL and OTPCL reflects a strategic move to leverage ONGC’s technical expertise and OTPCL’s experience in power generation and transmission in the Northeast region. It also supports India’s national energy security agenda and decarbonization goals.
This storage project adds to a series of initiatives in the Northeast aiming to tap into renewable sources while addressing the region’s unique geographical and climatic challenges. Further details about the project timeline and location are expected to be released in the coming months.
