EVLO Energy Storage Inc. (EVLO), a fully integrated battery energy storage systems (BESS) provider and subsidiary of Hydro-Québec, has successfully commissioned its first energy storage system in American Samoa. The 4-MW, 8-MWh, 2-hour duration energy storage system is part of a series of three projects aimed at enhancing renewable energy integration and grid stability in the region.

In collaboration with Eastern Power Solutions (EPS), a leading turn-key solar energy service provider, EVLO has launched this solar-plus-storage initiative in support of the American Samoa Power Authority (ASPA). ASPA’s mission is to provide safe, economical, and sustainable utility services to the local community.

The three projects, located on the islands of Tutuila and Aunu’u, will have capacities of 4 MW/8 MWh, 5 MW/10 MWh, and 1 MW/2 MWh. These systems are designed to support ramp rate control, smoothing and limiting fluctuations in solar photovoltaic (PV) power output, and ensuring reliable grid integration.

“At EVLO, we are dedicated to delivering safe and efficient energy storage solutions to utilities and power producers aiming to incorporate cleaner technologies into their energy mix,” said Sonia St-Arnaud, President and CEO of EVLO. “This project demonstrates the mutual commitment we have, with ASPA and EPS, towards a cleaner future and a more resilient electrical network. By providing robust, fully integrated BESS solutions and meeting clients’ needs wherever they are, EVLO ensures grid stability and supports the integration of renewable energy sources from mainland areas to isolated regions.”

Eastern Power Solutions COO Scott Bonney expressed pride in leading the construction efforts on these American Samoa projects: “With an international presence, we remain one of the most active companies bringing turn-key solar solutions to U.S. territories. The commissioning of this site illustrates the early achievements of our collaboration with EVLO and ASPA in solar and storage power generation projects.”

American Samoa, which relies heavily on imported fossil fuels for energy, aims to meet 100% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2040, with solar energy playing a key role. The island territory is strategically located to harness abundant solar resources, and the deployment of BESS will be critical in achieving the renewable energy goals while reducing dependence on imported fuels.

The American Samoa Renewable Energy Committee (ASREC) set the goal to achieve full renewable energy reliance by 2040, and the BESS projects will play a crucial role in enhancing solar energy utilization and ensuring a more sustainable, resilient energy future for the territory.
