Aboitiz Power Corporation (AboitizPower), through its subsidiary Therma Marine Inc. (TMI), has officially broken ground for its forthcoming 48-megawatt Nasipit Hybrid Energy Storage System (BESS) project. This innovative energy storage facility will be integrated into the TMI Mobile 2 oil-fired power plant located in Lawis, Sta. Ana, Nasipit, Agusan del Norte. Construction of the project is slated to commence in the second quarter of 2025, with operations expected to begin by the second quarter of 2026.

The BESS technology utilizes batteries to store excess electricity, which can then be discharged when needed to help stabilize supply or enhance power quality across the grid.

This marks AboitizPower’s second hybrid BESS project, following the successful deployment of the Philippines’ first such system at the TMI Mobile 1 facility in Maco, Davao de Oro, which began operations in 2022. These hybrid systems, combining oil-fired generation with battery storage, provide rapid-response power to support grid stability through ancillary services—critical functions that ensure consistent and reliable electricity delivery.

Upon completion, the Nasipit BESS project is expected to enhance grid stability and support the increasing integration of renewable energy into the power system. AboitizPower Transition Business Group COO for Operated Assets, Ronaldo Ramos, described it as a smart solution contributing to a more intelligent and resilient energy landscape during the groundbreaking ceremony.

The ceremony was attended by officials from the Agusan del Norte local government, including Governor Maria Angelica Rosedell Malbas Amante and Nasipit Mayor Roscoe Democrito Borja Plaza.

Aligned with the Philippines’ broader goals for its energy mix, AboitizPower continues to expand its energy portfolio by investing in renewable energy and select baseload infrastructure.
