E.ON, in collaboration with Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners, has announced a significant investment in a new battery storage project located in Uskmouth, South Wales, UK. This project marks a major step in E.ON’s commitment to large-scale battery storage, with the construction of two facilities each boasting a capacity of 230 megawatt-hours and an output of 115 megawatts on the site of a former coal-fired power station. E.ON has acquired one of these units, making it the company’s largest battery storage acquisition to date.
Scheduled to become operational in the first quarter of 2025, the Uskmouth battery storage facilities will play a crucial role in providing balancing energy and participating in the wholesale market. This project is designed to support approximately 35 million smartphones, illustrating its substantial capacity.
Keith Gains of Quinbrook and Nadia Jakobi of E.ON highlighted the project’s alignment with sustainable development goals and its contribution to the UK’s net-zero targets. The initiative is seen as a pivotal development in leveraging energy transition for sustainable growth, energy affordability, and security of supply.
The Uskmouth project also emphasizes the reuse of existing infrastructure to minimize environmental impact and support local employment, with the construction phase already boosting job creation in the region.
By stabilizing the grid and helping to manage energy prices through flexible storage solutions, this project represents a significant advancement in the energy sector’s move towards renewable sources and the achievement of broader climate protection goals.
