In a significant stride towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future, Convergent Energy and Power (Convergent), a leading energy storage solutions provider in North America, proudly announced today that it has surpassed a remarkable milestone of over 800 MW / 1 GWh in energy storage and solar-plus-storage systems either operational or in development. This achievement, equivalent to powering approximately 750,000 homes, underscores Convergent’s pivotal role in the rapidly evolving energy landscape.
With over $1 billion invested or committed to systems in operation or under development, Convergent’s success over the past decade reflects the surging global demand for energy storage solutions. The company’s endeavors align with the broader mission to address climate change impacts, propel the clean energy transition, and fortify the United States’ overstretched and aging power infrastructure.
“The power grid is the single most expensive thing America has ever built and it is not prepared to meet this moment of crisis, as defined by increasing electrification, urbanization, and extreme weather events. Energy storage, especially when paired with solar, is the answer to many of today’s challenges,” remarked Johannes Rittershausen, CEO and Co-Founder of Convergent Energy and Power. “We provide cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable energy to our partners, which include businesses and utilities. We are excited to offer solutions for our customers that also contribute to a better energy future and planet.”
Established in 2011, Convergent has played a pioneering role in the energy storage sector, dedicated to constructing an energy landscape that is not only cost-effective but also more reliable and environmentally sustainable.
Energy storage is a linchpin in the clean energy transition, as it allows for the optimization of renewable resources on the grid. While renewable sources produce power intermittently, energy storage can “firm up” these resources, maximizing their value to the grid. Furthermore, energy storage can alleviate electricity costs by storing energy during off-peak periods and dispatching it during peak demand, thereby enhancing the reliability of the aging electric grid strained by climate change.
Convergent has consistently been at the forefront, identifying new applications and achieving industry firsts in both energy storage and solar-plus storage. Examples include pioneering the first non-wires alternative for utility infrastructure in the United States and deploying the largest behind-the-meter battery energy storage system in North America at the time.
