In a groundbreaking move aimed at bolstering grid stability and empowering its members, Bandera Electric Cooperative has successfully launched a pioneering battery lease program. This transformative initiative, utilizing IQ Batteries from Enphase Energy, a global leader in energy technology, marks a significant stride toward optimizing energy consumption and reinforcing the resilience of the Texas Grid.
Bandera Electric Cooperative’s strategic partnership with Enphase Energy introduces an innovative approach to energy management. During its inaugural pilot phase, the battery lease program delivers a multitude of advantages to cooperative members, contributing to a collective reduction in energy consumption while creating new revenue streams for Bandera Electric. By directing surplus energy from Enphase’s battery storage systems into the Energy Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) wholesale electricity market, the cooperative enters the realm of economic sustainability.
Key among the program’s highlights are the individual benefits extended to cooperative members. Exclusive access to the battery storage systems during power outages ensures uninterrupted power supply to homes, enhancing the overall reliability and resilience of Bandera Electric’s service to its members.
In a momentous announcement on October 20, 2023, Bandera Electric affirmed its commitment to the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT). The cooperative pledged to implement a demand response program by December 25, 2023, introducing an energy-as-a-service model. Cooperative members can now subscribe to a comprehensive battery energy storage system, sustaining homes during outages and participating in demand response activities such as peak reduction. Bandera Electric also contributes excess energy to the ERCOT market.
Bill Hetherington, BEC Chief Executive Officer, expressed his enthusiasm about the program, stating, “This is a very exciting opportunity to expand our services and enhance our members’ quality of life. We have been fortunate enough to find strong partners in Enphase and Atma Energy to help our Board of Directors fulfill their financial commitment and deliver on the promise made to PUCT.”
The launch of this transformative program not only fulfills the cooperative’s promise to the PUCT but also sets the stage for a comprehensive, scalable initiative accessible to an increasing number of members in the years to come. Positioned strategically, Bandera Electric utilizes its Apolloware energy monitoring platform alongside the aggregated capacity of the battery storage systems, effectively transforming them into a virtual power plant on the ERCOT market.
The integration of Apolloware and the energy storage systems aligns seamlessly with the distributed energy resource pilot initiated by the PUCT and ERCOT, underscoring Bandera Electric’s commitment to embracing innovative technologies that enhance grid reliability and member satisfaction.
