In a groundbreaking collaboration, Delorean Power LLC (Delorean) and Paxton Municipal Light Department (PMLD) have joined forces to spearhead an innovative energy storage project set to revolutionize clean energy practices and substantially cut costs for PMLD customers.

Scheduled for operation in 2024, the 3-megawatt (MW)/9-megawatt-hour (MWh) energy storage facility will be owned and operated by Delorean, positioning itself as a pioneer in energy storage infrastructure. The primary aim of the project is to shield PMLD customers from the impact of rising capacity and transmission costs, ultimately curbing the escalation of electricity rates.

This visionary project strategically targets low-cost, off-peak hours for energy charging, capitalizing on periods when electricity boasts a lower carbon footprint. During peak demand hours, the stored energy will be discharged, replacing higher-cost and higher-emission generation sources. This shift from on-peak to off-peak energy demand is poised to deliver substantial economic and clean energy benefits to PMLD and its customer base.

Rory Jones, Delorean Co-Founder, and Managing Partner, expressed pride in the collaboration, stating, “We’re proud to collaborate with Paxton on this impactful project. Delorean’s core focus is on delivering economic value to our partners while achieving major sustainability gains. This project will generate millions in savings for ratepayers and establish Paxton as a clean energy innovator in Massachusetts.”

PMLD General Manager Tara Rondeau also expressed enthusiasm about the project, emphasizing its timely arrival amid soaring energy costs. “We are pleased to be working with Delorean on this project. It comes at a perfect time when energy costs have skyrocketed and are projected to stay high. This project will allow us to continue to provide the lower rates and reliable service our customers have come to expect.”

The Delorean and PMLD energy storage project marks the fourth installation in a broader initiative developed by Delorean in collaboration with the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company (MMWEC), the Commonwealth’s designated joint action agency for municipal utilities. Following Delorean’s success in a competitive MMWEC solicitation in late 2022, an exclusive partnership was established to construct similar energy storage projects across Massachusetts, with numerous projects expected to reach completion by the end of 2024. This strategic initiative underscores the commitment to advancing clean energy practices and reducing costs for municipal utilities across the state.
