Coal India Limited has secured a major battery energy storage project in Telangana, marking a significant step in its diversification into clean energy solutions.
According to a regulatory filing dated March 28, 2026, submitted to the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India, the company has received a Letter of Award (LOA) from Telangana Power Generation Corporation Limited.
The project involves the development of a 750 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Choutuppal, Telangana, with a discharge capacity of 187.5 MW for four hours. The initiative highlights the growing role of energy storage in enhancing grid stability and supporting the integration of renewable energy.
The total estimated cost of the project stands at approximately ₹1,057.09 crore, with the contract awarded at a tariff of ₹3.14 lakh per MW per month. The project underscores collaboration within India’s power sector to strengthen modern energy infrastructure.
Under the terms of the LOA, Coal India Limited is required to complete formalities, including signing the Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) and submitting a Performance Bank Guarantee, within 15 days. The project is expected to be completed within 18 months from the agreement signing.
The company confirmed that the contract does not involve any related party transactions, ensuring compliance with corporate governance norms.
The development reflects Coal India Limited’s strategic shift toward clean energy technologies, as it expands beyond coal-based operations to support India’s evolving energy transition and growing demand for grid-scale storage solutions.
