Trina Storage, a division of Trina Solar, has inked a significant deal with international Independent Power Producer Low Carbon to supply battery energy storage systems (BESS) for four sites across the United Kingdom. These cutting-edge systems will collectively offer approximately 190 MWh of storage capacity, enhancing each site’s ability to engage in arbitrage and provide ancillary services.

Dubbed as “two-hour projects,” each endeavor is designed to sustain its rated power output continuously for two hours. Strategically co-located with solar power plants, these projects aim to facilitate the seamless integration of additional renewable energy into the UK grid. Trina Storage is poised to deliver comprehensive support, ranging from consulting and system design to supply, integration, and long-term maintenance services, including extended performance warranties.

The rollout will feature Trina Storage Elementa 0.5P cabinets installed at Low Carbon’s Meadow, Sandon Brook, Fern Brook, and Birch Solar Farms. Key highlights of these cabinets include:

  • A modular, robust, fully integrated smart storage solution tailored for grid-scale installations
  • Advanced safety features such as industry-leading liquid-cooled LFP batteries, configurable multi-level battery management systems, and fire suppression systems to mitigate thermal anomalies
  • Swift installation facilitated by a simple plug-and-play design, coupled with efficient above-ground maintenance
  • An integrated energy management system amalgamating hardware and software for monitoring, controlling, and optimizing energy flow and consumption

Furthermore, under Long Term Service Agreements, Trina Storage will furnish Low Carbon with preventive maintenance alongside a 15-year performance warranty, offering flexibility in usage parameters.

Though these BESS installations are standalone projects, they are intrinsically linked to Trina Solar PV modules integrated into each connected solar power plant. This move underscores the longstanding partnership between the two companies and their commitment to delivering diverse energy generation and storage solutions to meet evolving customer demands.

Justin Thesiger, Managing Director of Global Supply Chain at Low Carbon, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating “We are delighted to be partnering with Trina Storage to deliver these projects. Trina has a leading position in the UK energy storage space, with a reputation for high-quality manufacturing and a secure supply chain. Having worked with the company previously on successful solar PV projects, expanding our partnership into the storage space made sense.

Gabriele Buccini, Head of Utility Storage at Trina Solar, echoed Thesiger’s sentiments, highlighting  “Storage is an area that will become increasingly crucial as the world continues its shift to renewable energy, so we are thrilled to be working with Low Carbon on this project. We look forward to seeing the results once installation has been completed, and to working closely with Low Carbon on further projects in the future.”
