Waaree Energies has announced plans to set up India’s largest integrated lithium-ion battery gigafactory in Rambilli, Anakapalli district of Andhra Pradesh, marking a major boost to the country’s Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) manufacturing capacity.
The project involves a total investment of ₹8,175 crore and represents a strategic expansion beyond solar module manufacturing into advanced battery cell production. The facility will have an annual production capacity of 16 GWh and will cover the complete value chain — from cell manufacturing and battery pack assembly to large-scale BESS integration.
Strengthening India’s BESS Ecosystem
The integrated gigafactory is designed to support India’s rapidly growing demand for grid-scale energy storage, renewable energy integration, and electric mobility. By manufacturing battery cells domestically, Waaree aims to reduce reliance on imports and strengthen supply chain resilience in the energy storage sector.
The State Investment Promotion Board of Andhra Pradesh, chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, has granted in-principle approval for the project. The state government has allocated 300 acres of land to facilitate the large-scale development.
Once operational by July 2027, the plant will significantly enhance India’s domestic BESS manufacturing capability, enabling deployment of large-scale storage solutions essential for grid stability and renewable energy balancing.
Supporting Energy Transition and Employment
The project is expected to generate approximately 3,000 direct jobs, contributing to industrial growth in the Anakapalli region.
Aligned with the Government of India’s “Make in India” initiative, the gigafactory supports national goals of building self-reliant clean energy infrastructure. By integrating cell production with BESS manufacturing, Waaree Energies is positioning itself as a comprehensive clean energy solutions provider across the solar and storage value chain.
The development underscores the growing importance of battery storage as a critical enabler of India’s renewable energy expansion and long-term energy transition strategy.
