Juniper Green Energy Limited has commissioned 60 MWh of India’s first merchant Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Bikaner, Rajasthan, marking a significant step in the country’s evolving energy storage market. The project, developed through its subsidiary Juniper Green Cosmic Private Limited, positions the company among the early movers in large-scale merchant energy storage.

The commissioned capacity forms part of a 100 MWh BESS project, with the remaining 40 MWh expected to be commissioned shortly. Once fully operational, the facility will rank among the largest operational BESS installations in India, enabling revenue opportunities through peak power arbitrage, grid balancing services and participation in ancillary power markets.

The 60 MWh system has successfully completed trial operations and received approval from the Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NRLDC). Commercial operations commenced on December 24, 2025, Juniper Green Energy confirmed.

In parallel, the company has already installed an additional 400 MWh of BESS capacity at Fatehgarh, Rajasthan, which is targeted for commissioning by Q1 2026. This development is expected to significantly strengthen Juniper’s energy storage portfolio and enhance long-term growth visibility.

Battery Energy Storage Systems are increasingly viewed as a critical component of India’s energy transition, supporting grid stability, renewable energy integration, peak demand management and more efficient utilisation of transmission infrastructure. As part of its long-term strategy, Juniper Green Energy plans to deploy BESS capacity across its solar project sites connected to the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS), creating an integrated renewable-plus-storage platform.

Commenting on the development, Ankush Malik, CEO of Juniper Green Energy, said the commissioning of the company’s first merchant BESS reflects its execution capabilities and strategic focus on emerging opportunities in energy storage. He added that BESS represents a value-accretive asset class that complements Juniper’s renewable portfolio while enhancing diversification and supporting grid reliability.

With a growing pipeline across renewable generation and energy storage assets, Juniper Green Energy continues to scale its operations, aiming to deliver sustainable, long-term value for stakeholders while supporting India’s clean energy ambitions.
